Message in a Bottle – An Update to the Golden Record
Message in a Bottle – An Update to the Golden Record
Hello Members, are excited to host LY for an exciting seminar tomorrow, January 10th, both in-person in building 180-101 and on WebEx at noon. You don’t want to miss this!
Abstract: Building upon the Voyager Golden Records' legacy, the Message in a Bottle (MIAB) project aims to reach beyond our world, much like its predecessors launched with Voyager 1 and 2 in 1977. These earlier records presented a snapshot of Earth and human civilization, symbolizing our yearning to connect with advanced extraterrestrial beings. MIAB addresses a significant challenge: communicating without shared signs, symbols, or semiotic conventions. It employs scientific methods to devise a novel mode of expression that conveys humanity's story. Our objective is to encapsulate human society's collective knowledge, emotions, innovations, and aspirations. We strive to do so in a universally comprehensible yet contextually significant manner. This endeavor highlights human society's development, life's evolution on Earth, and our future aspirations and concerns. The MIAB, a vessel traversing time and space, also aims to unite and inspire current and future generations. It celebrates our common human journey, emphasizing the importance of preserving our collective experience.
This seminar will be recorded and shared on JPLTube.
